How your donation is leveraged at the federal level:

  • When you donate $400, 75% of it will be refunded off your taxes next year, so your actual cost is only $100.
  • For that $100, the campaign gets $400 immediately – which we then spend on the campaign.
  • If we get 10% of the vote locally, then 60% of our expenses are refunded to us by Elections Canada – that is another $240 back.
  • In addition, for every vote we get, Elections Canada pays the central party $1.83 per year, of which roughly 1/3 ($0.61) comes back to our EDA. Let us use a very conservative figure of an $8,000 campaign (we are aiming for $20,000) and let us say that $8,000 gets just over the 10% threshold. That would mean an extra 5,000 votes over the last election. At $8,000 your $400 donation is 5% of the budget and so we can say your donation generated 250 of those votes. At $1.83 per vote that is another $450 split between the local and national parties.

So, your $100 contribution becomes $1,100 in the first year – of which almost $800 stays here in Oshawa. The EDA gets another $150 every year and the central office gets another $300.

That is incredibly generous leverage – where else can you make a $100 donation and have it topped up with another $1,000?

But nobody gets anything until you make the initial donation!
